On October 16, 2023, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed the Non Toxic Tent Act (AB 267) into law, bringing an end to the state’s outdated 1975 flammability standards. Previously, these regulations required the use of toxic flame retardants in camping tents and children’s play structures, even though these chemicals offered no significant fire safety benefits. Instead, they posed severe health risks, including cancer, reproductive issues, and neurological harm, as the chemicals leached into the environment and human bodies.
The legislation marks a significant step forward, enabling manufacturers to use modern materials that are inherently safer and less flammable, without resorting to harmful treatments. Industry leaders and environmental advocates have long pushed for these changes, citing evidence that similar materials used globally meet fire safety needs without toxic additives.
